FRISCO, Texas — There could be more offensive firepower on the way to the Dallas Cowboys as they approach OTAs in May, by way of a talented veteran wide receiver. Zay Jones, former second-round pick of the Buffalo Bills in 2017, is visiting with America’s Team on Wednesday as he works through his free agency process.
Jones, 29, was released on April 30 by the Jacksonville Jaguars, the organization he spent the last two seasons of his NFL career with, and the Cowboys know this all too well.
That’s because Jones scored three touchdowns and reeled in 109 receiving yards in the overtime victory over the Cowboys in 2022. That performance undoubtedly stuck in the mind of head coach Mike McCarthy, also the offensive play caller in Dallas as of last season.
And McCarthy wants to tandem Jones with Brandin Cooks and First-team All-Pro wide receiver CeeDee Lamb; on a WRs depth chart that also added an elite athlete in Ryan Flournoy via the 2024 NFL Draft.
There’s an added subtle connection between Jones and the Cowboys as well — considering his father, former linebacker Robert Jones, was Dallas’ first-round pick in the 1992 NFL Draft.
The elder Jones earned PFWA All-Rookie Team honors in his first season and ultimately went on to help the Cowboys win three Super Bowls during their dynasty years in the mid-1990s.
Time will tell if Zay Jones follows in his father’s footsteps in putting on a Cowboys’ jersey, but Dallas is certainly hoping he will.
Jones currently has 3,028 receiving yards and 18 touchdowns in his NFL career.
