After their set of new jerseys were inadvertently leaked earlier in the day, the Detroit Lions released their full set of uniforms on Thursday night at Ford Field in front of a crowd of media and season-ticket holders.

While the majority of Detroit’s uniform changes were minor tweaks (ie: adding a few stripes and the more significant change to the jersey font), the most notable development was the reintroduction of the black uniforms. The black jerseys were revealed earlier in the day, but upon the full release, Detroit revealed a set of black pants to pair with that uniform, which is topped with the team’s blue-chrome alternate helmet—which had a few new tweaks of its own.

Black uniforms were one of the most requested changes, according to team sources. Detroit previously had black uniforms after a 2003 reveal, but after one of the worst eras of Lions football under former general manager Matt Millen, Detroit removed them from the rotation with their 2017 uniform release.

The main difference between those old black uniforms and the new ones is that the numbers are no longer outlined by thick white lining, but rather a less contrasting thin grey line. Also, obviously, the new black uniforms will match with black pants compared to the awkward contrast with grey pants in the past. Detroit will also have the option to pair the black jerseys with their blue pants.

The rest of the uniform reveal seemed to be a nod to the past, particularly with the block-style font and the perforated jerseys. And the Lions’ throwback uniforms—a highly-popular tradition—remain part of the rotation and are relatively unchanged. Additionally, the Lions added a blue facemask.

Here’s a look at all of our photos from the official uniform release on Thursday night.
