UnitedHealth COO Dirk McMahon To Retire

• UnitedHealth’s chief operating officer Dirk McMahon is retiring after more than two decades at the company.
• McMahon plans to retire on April 1, the payer said in a Wednesday filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Wednesday.
• UnitedHealth has yet to name a replacement for McMahon.

In the filing, UnitedHealth applauded McMahon for his “dedicated and distinguished service” to the healthcare giant, which included stints as at the head of numerous business divisions and is concluding with McMahon as COO.

McMahon joined UnitedHealth in 2003 as CEO of benefits operations at payer arm UnitedHealthcare. He served as CEO of pharmacy benefits manager OptumRx from 2011 to 2014 before moving to UnitedHealth’s EVP of operations.

McMahon oversaw operations at UnitedHealth’s health services division Optum from 2017 to 2019 before being named chief executive of UnitedHealthcare, according to his LinkedIn.

McMahon was named COO in February 2021.

During McMahon’s 20 years at UnitedHealth, the company has grown from a health insurer with annual revenue of $28.8 billion to a massive health conglomerate that brought in $362 billion last year.
