Titan Plus Luxe Review: A Supportive Hybrid Mattress That Caters To Plus-Size Side And Back Sleepers

As someone who cares deeply about my sleep quality, I am always looking for products to revamp my bedtime routine to get the best sleep possible. As a plus-size person, I struggled to find a mattress that worked for my needs. Generic mattresses do not offer the support I need, yet many plus-size specific mattresses are too firm and leave me feeling sore the next day. So, when I read about the Titan Plus Luxe, a medium-firm mattress that caters to people over 250 pounds, I knew I had to try it. 

The Titan Plus Luxe from Brooklyn Bedding was developed after feedback regarding its initial plus-size mattress, the Titan Plus. Many buyers appreciated the support of the Titan Plus but felt that it was too firm for their liking. Construction

Designed and assembled in Arizona, the Titan Plus Luxe mattress has five separate layers of comfort that support up to 1,000 pounds. For the cover, choose from a soft quilted top with a layer of responsive gel foam or upgrade to a special cooling cover with cool fabric and fibers for a comfortable sleeping experience. The following comfort foam layer contours to your body to provide pressure point relief, while the transition foam offers deep compression support. 

The key to the mattress’s support is the fourth layer: 8 inches of nearly 900 individually encased coils that work together to create the firm-yet-plush support of the Titan Plus Luxe. Finally, the coil core sits on an inch of base foam for durability.  

Our review of the Titan Plus Luxe Mattress

Setup

The Titan Plus Luxe Mattress shipped free with UPS and arrived tightly rolled in a tall cardboard box. The cardboard encasing the mattress was very thin, so the box itself sustained significant damage in transit. This made it difficult to carry up the flight of stairs to my apartment, as the cardboard handles were ripped and the mattress was essentially falling out of the box. Keep in mind, too, that the mattress is relatively heavy. A twin weighs 80 pounds, whereas a California king weighs 150 pounds. 

The unboxing process was simple. After removing the mattress from the protective plastic bag, I very carefully cut the shrink wrap keeping it snug and secure. Once the shrink wrap is removed, the mattress springs into place. After giving it an hour to expand, it was ready for bedtime. There was a slight odor after unboxing, but it had completely faded by the second night. 

Comfort and support

As a combination sleeper, I was really pleased with the comfort of this mattress in every position. While I usually gravitate to sleeping on my stomach, I have been making a concerted effort to sleep on my side since stomach sleeping can cause neck and back issues. I was happy to find that it was most comfortable to sleep on my side with the Titan Plus Luxe. The level of support the mattress offers is incredible. My body — my hips and shoulders especially— felt cradled by the bed. This cradling also meant that my spine was in alignment, so I had no soreness when waking up, which helped me feel much better throughout the day. 

The Titan Plus Luxe is a true medium firmness mattress. Brooklyn Bedding rates it a 6 on a scale of 1-10 for firmness, and I wholeheartedly agree as a plus-size person. However, average and lightweight size sleepers may find the mattress feels more firm. For couples of mixed weights, both partners should be able to find some comfort. 

Finding the right firmness in a mattress can be difficult can be difficult as a plus-size person. I sink into most soft mattresses, but very firm mattresses don’t adjust to the curves of my body. That being said, I think Brooklyn Bedding has found the perfect formula for a mattress that is supportive but still flexible. Of course, firmness is up to personal preference, so other reviewers found the mattress to be too firm or too soft. But, I was personally very pleased with the feel of this mattress. If you prefer a medium feel, the Titan Plus Luxe could be the perfect match for you. 

Heat dissipation

I’m a hot sleeper, so I opted for the cooling cover upgrade. This top fabric is cool to the touch and removes excess heat, so you can say goodbye to waking up soaked in sweat. At the same time, though, the cover never made me feel uncomfortably chilly. Even on first impression, I was impressed with the cooling capabilities. The coolness from the cover radiates through the sheets, so you feel like you’re sleeping on the cool side of the pillow all night long. 

In testing, the Titan Plus Luxe demonstrated impressive cooling capabilities. Using an infrared thermometer, I calculated the average temperature of the mattress before laying down, immediately after getting up, and 2 minutes after getting up. Prior to laying down, the average temperature was a cool 71.9 degrees Fahrenheit. Getting up the next morning, the average temperature was 81.4 degrees. For reference, with other mattresses, the typical temperature right after getting up is 89.5 degrees. I was so surprised by the cooling that I actually redid testing to double-check, but sure enough, the mattress really does stay that cool. On the other hand, the average temperature 2 minutes after getting up was 74.9 degrees, which is much lower than the typical 12-degree temperature drop for other mattresses. Since the mattress stayed so cool, though, this was expected.

This mattress is an excellent option for hot sleepers. The cover is noticeably cool, and the mattress’s heat-dissipation properties keep you comfortable throughout the night. 

Edge support

For any mattress, proper edge support ensures that you can comfortably sit and lie close to the end of the bed. This is especially important when you sleep with a pet or a partner, as you can often find yourself pushed close to the edge of the mattress. Plus, strong edge support makes it easier to get in and out of the bed. 

To test edge support, we measure how far the mattress sinks when sitting on the edge. Then, we note how comfortable we are lying on the edge and see how far we can before rolling off the bed. 

Unfortunately, I found that the Titan Plus Luxe had suboptimal edge support. When sitting on the edge, the mattress sank 5 inches, significantly more sinkage than the average 3.5 inches for other mattresses. I also barely had to roll to fall off the edge. While this mattress has excellent comfort, cooling, and motion isolation, it is lacking in edge support. 

Motion isolation

If you sleep with a partner who tosses in their sleep or a pet who jumps on and off the bed all night, motion isolation is particularly important. Motion isolation ensures that you won’t be disturbed by small movements in the night, which in turn promotes deeper sleep. 

To test motion isolation, I placed an unopened soda can in the center of the bed. I also opened a vibrometer app on my phone to measure the vibrations using the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale. I placed my phone about a foot from the soda can. Then, I dropped a 15-pound weight a foot away from the can and two feet away from the phone. I repeated this test five times and noted the can’s movement and the vibrometer readings. 

The Titan Plus Luxe performed very well in motion isolation testing. Even with the plush top layer, the can never budged from its upright position throughout the five tests. Plus, the vibrations ranged between 5-6 on the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale. Most mattresses fall within the 6-8 range, so our readings indicate particularly effective motion isolation. Subjectively, I never noticed my dog jumping on the bed with me, nor was I disturbed by any other motion. 

Trial period and warranty

Brooklyn Bedding offers a 120-night trial period but requires you to try the mattress for at least 30 days from the day of delivery before sending it back. There is also a $99 fee for returns to cover the price of picking up and transporting the mattress. There are no returns or exchanges for items on clearance. Also, keep in mind that you can only use the 120-night trial on one occasion.

The 10-year warranty covers foam cell structure defects, cracking or splitting material after normal use, impressions greater than 1.5″, and sagging if you have been using a foundation. The warranty does not cover general wear-and-tear or damage from improper use, like if you use the mattress without a foundation. 

Cons to consider

The Titan Plus Luxe’s biggest con is its lack of edge support. Especially for plus-size people with heavier bodies, this can leave sleepers feeling like they are going to fall off the side of the bed, compromising some levels of support. While this mattress’s motion isolation is excellent, the lack of edge support means that it might not be the best pick for couples. 

While minor, the mattress’s packaging quality and weight make it difficult to move around, especially before unboxing. Once the bed is unboxed, though, it is a dream to sleep on. I hope that Brooklyn Bedding moves to thicker, sturdier cardboard to ensure that its packaging matches the same high standard of quality as its products.

What are your alternatives?

If you are plus-size and love a very firm mattress, consider the Titan Plus Hybrid. It offers a 9 firmness rating, making it well-suited to stomach sleepers, and is a little more affordable. For an even more luxurious mattress, Brooklyn Bedding launched the Titan Plus Elite, with a pillowtop design in August 2024, which has a dual-coil system and higher-density foams for enhanced support, and the Glaciotex cooling upgrades come standard. It’s slightly firmer than the Luxe but less so than the original Titan Plus. 

There are a growing number of mattresses that cater to plus-size sleepers, too. Our current best plus-size mattress is the Big Fig Mattress, whose business model strictly caters to big and tall people. It uses high-density foam, individually wrapped coils, and cooling technology to ensure a truly luxurious sleeping experience and can support up to 1,100 pounds of weight. Plus, it offers firm edge foam and exceptional edge support, which the Titan Plus Luxe struggled with. 

Brooklyn Bedding’s sister company, Helix, also makes three mattresses for heavy sleepers. The Plus Luxe is the most similar to the Titan Plus Luxe, with a similar cooling cover, enhanced steel coils, and a pillowtop design. It is marginally more affordable and has a longer 15-year warranty with a 100-night trial. 

WinkBeds also offers a Plus mattress with enhanced edge support, high-density anti-sag foam, and a zoned latex support layer for heavier bodies. It also offers a lifetime warranty and a 120-night trial. 

The bottom line

With superior motion isolation and cooling capabilities, the Titan Plus Luxe balances plushness and firmness and is an ideal choice for plus-size sleepers over 250 pounds who are seeking support as a back or side sleeper. Combination sleepers will be easily able to change positions without feeling stuck in bed. However, edge support could be improved.
