Dr. Lew Schon: A fascinating tale of medicine and music

One of The Ortho Show’s most remarkable guests—and the first guest to blow a shofar on the show!—is Dr. Lew Schon, Director of Orthopedic Innovation at The Institute for Foot and Ankle Reconstruction at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore, MD. Dr. Schon is an internationally recognized and renowned foot and ankle surgeon, researcher, and instructor specializing in orthopedic surgery. In this episode, Dr. Schon not only share his passion for foot and ankle orthopedic medicine; he also gives listeners a fascinating look into how maintaining his skill as a musician has provided fulfillment in a way he never could have imagined!

Dr. Schon is a practicing physician with more than 35 years of experience in medicine and patient care. He also serves as an Associate Professor at both John Hopkins and Georgetown Universities, where he is actively training orthopedic surgery residents and clinical fellows. He teaches undergraduate students in Biomedical Engineering, Dance, and Pre-Med as well, at multiple universities. Dr. Schon has won multiple awards, including recognition as a “Top Doctor” by Baltimore magazine and Castle Connolly Medical, Ltd.

Dr. Schon has been a leader in the innovation and development of numerous treatment techniques and orthopedic devices for patients with foot and ankle disorders. Among these, he’s the co-inventor of the Zimmer™ Total Ankle replacement—and one of the few surgeons worldwide offering this treatment to patients. However, his talents are not limited to medical practice: Dr. Schon is also a performing musician with his group, The Stimulators.

A passion for the mechanics of the foot and ankle

Born in Manhattan to a dentist and a teacher, Dr. Schon decided doctors had the “coolest” profession early on—but it wasn’t until he was in his residency at NYU that he discovered foot and ankle orthopedics. At a time when few physicians and surgeons pursued this branch of medicine, Dr. Schon developed a unique passion for the biomechanically complex structure of the foot and ankle.

In his episode on The Ortho Show, Dr. Schon discusses how he first discovered his passion for foot and ankle medicine. He shares some of the things he loves about the practice of orthopedics, such as the wide range of patients with whom he interacts in his practice and the miraculous scope of sports medicine and what it can accomplish.

Dr. Schon also shares the amazing story of how he came to be onstage with David Grohl and his group, the Foo Fighters, in front of a crowd of about 38,000 at Fenway Park in 2015. This remarkably creative orthopedic surgeon has a great deal of music in his background and in his family; when he took over the orthopedic care of David Grohl, lead singer and founder of the Foo Fighters, their shared love of music provided an unexpected connection. Prepare to be entertained and inspired as Dr. Schon recounts the winding road leading to the stage at Fenway Park.

Through this remarkable story, Dr. Lew Schon highlights the value of maintaining creative interests outside of one’s primary profession, showing how a simple hobby or creative pursuit can become a life-sustaining force when you least expect it. Tune in to the Ortho Show and become part of a dynamic and engaging learning experience.
