The mattress buying process is not pleasant, but the Digital Age has reduced some of its annoyances. For instance, you no longer have to spend Saturday afternoons lying down on mattresses with your shoes on while a sales associate waits. Direct-to-consumer companies can be navigated with your laptop at home, and they typically make cheaper, often superior products. Those same companies make the process less labor-intensive — delivering the mattress to your doorstep (and doing so for no added cost).

The hassle most online companies haven’t addressed yet are the annoyances of buying a new mattress but still being saddled with your old one (is there such a thing as easy mattress recycling in a walk-up?), and not being able to test the beds in person before buying. To the latter, shoppers should feel better knowing all the best online mattress companies have at least a 100-night risk-free sleep trial — if you don’t love it, just say so. They’ll send a courier over, remove the mattress, and either donate it or recycle it. And you’ll get a full refund. It might be shy of ideal, but it’s a huge convenience for the average person.

About Casper’s in-home delivery service

However, some online mattress companies do pretty much everything you don’t want to do when buying a mattress. Casper, for instance, will bring your new mattress to your home, set it up, and take your old mattress with them when they go — which they then recycle for you. If there’s assembly required, they’ll do it for you.

The service is called “in-home delivery,” and you can choose it as your preferred delivery at checkout. It costs $199 regardless of how many products you order — but it is nonrefundable. So, if you do ultimately decide to return your mattress under Casper’s 100-night trial, you won’t be refunded the cost of delivery.

The service is available to anyone living in any of the 48 contiguous states or select parts of Canada.

How it works

Casper’s delivery partner will call you to schedule your delivery date once they have all of your products ready to go in their local hub. The night before your delivery, they’ll reach out to confirm your four-hour delivery window.

You can also add a removal service to the In-Home Delivery at no additional cost, so the same couriers will remove and recycle your old mattress and foundation/box spring within the same time window. The only caveat to be aware of is that you must be replacing what you are asking them to remove with a Casper purchase. As in, an order of one mattress will have one mattress eligible for removal. An order with one Casper foundation will have a removal of one old foundation/box spring eligible.

About Casper

If you’re unfamiliar with Casper — which is unlikely if you’ve ever read a subway ad — it’s one brand that has become semi-synonymous with successful online startups. Their most popular mattress, The One, starts at $860 and pioneered the modern bed-in-a-box movement.

Casper recently relaunched its entire line of mattresses, but we’ve tested almost every mattress the brand has made up until now for our Casper mattress review. Our favorite is the Dream Max (previously the Nova Hybrid), which starts at $2,495. The company has also branched out from just mattresses to sheets, pillows, bed frames, and pet beds among other things. Thus far, Casper has made good products at accessible prices, and they’ve done well as a company because of that. We’ll be testing its new mattress lineup soon for consideration in our guide to the best mattresses.

Other mattress companies that offer mattress removal

Casper isn’t the only mattress brand that offers removal of your old mattress with white-glove delivery. Some brands, like Saatva and Tempur Pedic, offer it at no additional cost.

  • Leesa: Optional in-home mattress delivery and old mattress removal for $199 at checkout, including on our top overall pick from our guide to the best mattress, the Leesa Sapira Hybrid.
  • Saatva: Included with free white glove delivery if you check the box for mattress removal at checkout.
  • Tempur Pedic: Included with white-glove delivery, which is standard on all orders excluding the Tempur Cloud.
  • Bear: Optional add-on to remove your old mattress with white-glove delivery selection at checkout, starting at $175.
  • Helix: Optional add-on to remove your old mattress with white-glove delivery selection at checkout, starting at $159.
  • Sleep Number: Option to add on mattress removal with delivery for a $50 fee.

The bottom line

If you need a new mattress but dread the idea of getting rid of your old one, you might want to look into Casper. The quality is great, but you might be even more thankful for the convenience.
