weekly-rankings-notes:-scouting-breakdowns-on-20-recent-commits-nationwideWeekly Rankings Notes: Scouting Breakdowns On 20 Recent Commits Nationwide

247Sports’ weekly scouting feature is back after a two-week hiatus, providing evaluation notes on 20 recent commitments from across the country.

In the era of official visits taking place in late spring and early summer, the first week or two of July has become unofficially known as “Commitment Season” in the college football recruiting world. Numerous prospects from all over the map make commitment decisions to programs big and small, far and wide.

With that in mind, the latest 247Sports weekly rankings notes — back after a two-week hiatus caused by multiple events that had us on the road — focus on the scouting breakdowns of 20 recent commitments, including more than a dozen Top247 members. We start with a closer look at the nation’s No. 1 receiver in the senior class following his July 4 pledge to Oregon.

Scouting notes: Top247 5-star WR Dakorien Moore – Oregon commit

Oregon sent shockwaves through the recruiting world Thursday night, when Duncanville (Texas) 2025 five-star receiver Dakorien Moore committed to the Ducks. Below, I provide some insight into the nation’s top receiver prospect and what he’ll bring to Eugene (full scouting report on Moore’s player profile).

One of the nation’s top offensive weapons following immensely productive junior season and a second consecutive Texas 6A D-I state championship. In the 5-11, 180-185 range but possesses musculature that presents a more stout receiver than listed size suggests. Owns good length and large hands to further enhance catch radius. Caught more than 70 passes for 1,500-plus yards and 18 TDs on 21+ yards per reception in 2023, showcasing consistent field-stretching vertical ability, as well as short-to-intermediate effectiveness enhanced by run-after-catch artistry. Regularly capable of sudden explosion from a dead stop in RAC situations. Displays speed-changing nuance without punitive down-shifting as a decelerator/accelerator. Outstanding sprint data with a 10.40 100 and 21.70 200, plus enormous long jump data. Member of nationally-known Duncanville sprint relay. Route tree expanded as a junior, thanks in part to meteoric development of QB classmate Keelon Russell. Projects as a high-major impact player with the potential to advance to the pro level sooner than later. Legitimate high-round upside. — Gabe Brooks, 247Sports national scouting analyst

Scouting notes: Top247 5-star TE Linkon Cure – Kansas State commit

Linkon Cure (Photo: Andrew Ivins, 247Sports)

Kansas State landed an historic commitment earlier this week when in-state Top247 five-star tight end Linkon Cure pledged to the Wildcats. Here’s a closer look at No. 26 overall in the 2025 Top247, which puts him No. 2 nationally among tight ends:

Big, athletic, playmaking tight end prospect who can line up as a true receiver and provide mismatches in the passing game. Valuable two-way snaps at the high school level, combined with strong multi-sport athletic profile. Double-digit scorer and high-flying act on the basketball court. Kansas 3A state championship-caliber hurdler. Uses speed-changing nuance as a route runner and gravitates toward space. Combines strength with speed as a run-after-catch threat. Athletic enough to hurt defenses in the vertical game, while also providing a big-play threat in the screen/quick game. Excellent ball-winning consistency in contested situations. Adding some mass/strength and calibrating to P4-caliber opponents, especially when blocking in the run game, are keys. Enters senior season as an elite tight end prospect with high-round NFL Draft upside. Gifted flex tight end with physical tools and strength capacity to fit all TE modes at the high-major level, and potentially beyond. — Brooks

Scouting notes: Top247 4-star LB Tavion Wallace – Arkansas commit

Tavion Wallace (Photo: Zach Blostein, 247Sports)

Jesup (Ga.) Wayne County’s Tavion Wallace committed earlier in the week to Arkansas. Here’s a closer look at Wallace, who’s ranked in the top 40 overall of the 2025 Top247 rankings:

Hyper-athletic second-level defender who owns 10.61 100-meter speed. Strong football pedigree as the younger brother of 2024 NFL Draft third-round pick Trevin Wallace, a former Top247 four-star linebacker who starred at Kentucky. Estimated a shade over 6-foot-1, 215 pounds with ideal length measurements for a linebacker. Premium athletic traits show up often when rushing the passer off the edge or as a blitzer at the prep level, but isn’t strictly a pass-rusher at this stage of his development. Shows nuance reading the triangle when fitting runs inside the box and will strike upon impact. Projects as a multi-year P4 starter with the ability to contribute immediately on defense and special teams. Should be viewed as one of the top second-level defenders at this stage of the evaluation process for the 2025 cycle, with plenty of long-term NFL Draft upside thanks to his efforts as a traditional inside-the-box ‘backer and added versatility rushing the passer off the edge. — Hudson Standish, 247Sports national scouting analyst

Scouting notes: Top247 4-star edge Damien Shanklin – LSU commit

Damien Shanklin (Photo: Bill Kurelic, 247Sports)

Friday brought a top 50 overall prospect to LSU’s 2025 class as Indianapolis Warren Central’s Damien Shanklin pledged to the Tigers. Ranked as a top five edge prospect nationally, Shanklin brings immense upside to LSU’s class.

A prototype modern defensive end verified at 6-foot-4.5, pushing 230 pounds entering his senior season, with ideal length measurements. In addition to his elite physical tools, Shanklin exhibits an explosive first step off of the line of scrimmage along with promising knee bend and hip flexibility. Plays with strong hands at the point of attack and can disengage quickly to chase down ball carriers. Effort level should never be an issue, owns a hot motor and will pursue the football with fanatical determination. Has displayed the ability to win with both speed and power out on the outside. Bends better than most his size and can find leverage while running the arc. Could be utilized in a variety of different roles along the line of scrimmage depending on how his body matures, primarily worked as a 7- or 9-technique in high school. Projects as a multi-year impact player at the Power Four level with the physical clay to be molded into an early-round NFL Draft pick. — Standish

Scouting notes: Top247 4-star IOL Seuseu Alofaituli – Miami commit

Seuseu Alofaituli

Friday brought a big recruiting win out west to the Miami Hurricanes, who landed elite Las Vegas Bishop Gorman interior O-line prospect Seuseu Alofaituli. Ranked No. 55 overall in the 2025 Top247, Alofaituli sits at No. 2 among IOL projections. Here’s more from Greg Biggins:

One of the most technically sound offensive lineman in this year’s class. Will be a rare four-year starter for national powerhouse Bishop Gorman and has shown the ability to play anywhere along the offensive line but projects as a guard/center at the next level. At 6-3, 280 pounds, Alofaituli may not have the biggest frame but makes up for it with his strength, feet, balance, physicality and high level football IQ. He understands leverage and how to play the position at a college level right now. He’s quick off the ball, moves extremely well laterally and can easily get to the second level and make a block on a linebacker or safety. He may not have the highest ceiling among the OL group but could have the highest floor and we definitely think he has all the tools to play at the NFL level. — Greg Biggins, 247Sports national scouting analyst

Scouting notes: Top247 4-star edge Justin Hill – Alabama commit

Justin Hill (Photo: 247Sports)

Alabama hit Big Ten country Wednesday to land a commitment from the 2025 Top247’s No. 60 overall prospect in Justin Hill, an athletic edge defender from Winton Woods in Cincinnati. Here’s what Hill brings to the Tide’s No. 2-ranked class:

Talented standing edge pass rusher who produces with tools/athleticism and motor alike. Verified in the 6-3, 220 range with long arms. More than doubled sack total from sophomore (5.5) to junior season (13). Gained ample reps in a two-point wide-9 alignment that revealed encouraging dip-and-bend flexibility and arc-running juice. Also flashed an occasional heavy inside hand to get larger blockers on their heels. Excels in chase-down situations thanks to closing speed. Regardless of ultimate positional home, will need to add some mass and get accustomed to playing through bigger/faster/stronger contact. Could get swallowed up by big tackles, especially in the run game. In addition to edge snaps, has also played off the ball at linebacker and could potentially provide college snaps there as well. However, tape reveals a pass rusher at heart, and ideally a staff finds a way to keep him in that role. Projects to the high-major level as a potential impact player with long-term NFL Draft upside. — Brooks

Scouting notes: Top247 4-star LB Noah Mikhail – Texas A&M commit

Noah Mikhail

Texas A&M has been busy in the state of California, which is where the Aggies went to get recent Top247 four-star linebacker pledge Noah Mikhail. Here’s a closer look at the No. 83 overall prospect in the 2025 Top247 rankings.

We’ve been watching Mikhail since he was just a freshman and he has continued to develop and get better on both sides of the ball. He’s a two-way player who has put up numbers offensively at running back and receiver, but linebacker will be his meal ticket at the next level and beyond. Long, rangy, and tough and flies to the football. Physical player who can really close and is one of the bigger hitters in the region. A sideline-to-sideline type of linebacker who probably projects best as an inside guy at the college level, but shows the versatility to play outside, cover, and even rush off the edge. Highly intelligent player who’s a natural leader and someone who looks like a future captain wherever he ends up. Possesses the talent to play for any P4 program in the country and likely owns an NFL ceiling. — Biggins

Scouting notes: Top247 4-star LB Gavin Nix – Miami commit

Gavin Nix (Photo: Andrew Ivins, 247Sports)

Miami kicked off July with a top 100 commitment from Gavin Nix, a Top247 four-star linebacker ranked No. 88 overall in the 2025 class. Here’s 247Sports Director of Scouting Andrew Ivins’ breakdown of Nix.

Battle-tested, high-IQ linebacker that displays outstanding key-and-diagnose ability for his age. Will exit IMG Academy as a multi-year starter after earning varsity snaps as a sophomore. Sifts through traffic with a win-at-all-cost mentality and is consistently violent at the point of attack. Should offer some value at the next level as a blitzer with his stack-and-shed capabilities. Athletic enough to handle drop coverage responsibilities and can hang in man-on-man situations, but is much better against the run than he is the pass at this stage as he excels at flowing forward and finding the football. Might lack a ton of real growth potential with his muscled-up build (has hovered right around 5-foot-11, 225 pounds since he emerged as a 9th grader), but combination of plus instincts, impressive play speed and relentless effort should lead to plenty of success on Saturdays. Projects as a potential impact player and a high-volume tackler in a multi-dimensional scheme. — Andrew Ivins, 247Sports director of scouting

Scouting notes: Top247 4-star SAF Hylton Stubbs – Miami commit

Hylton Stubbs (Photo: Andrew Ivins, 247Sports)

Jacksonville (Fla.) Mandarin’s Hylton Stubbs is a top 100 overall prospect, top 10 safety, and top 20 Sunshine State recruit, per the 2025 Top247 rankings. Here’s a closer look at Stubbs, who committed Thursday to Miami:

Well-rounded safety prospect that can defend the pass and the run. Added some good mass between junior and senior seasons and doesn’t appear to be done maturing. Has experience working in a variety of different alignments and can likely do the same at the next level as he’s a spirited competitor in the box and alert in coverage. Strikes people as a tackler, oftentimes exploding through the hips. Tracks the football well on the back end and has the ball skills to come down with takeaways. Projects as a potential multi-year impact defender at the Power Four level that can add value in a variety of different ways as he can match tight ends, cut down run lanes, and get home on the blitz. Likely to find most success in an aggressive scheme that wants to move him around and put him in position to make plays. NFL upside with his physicality. — Ivins

Scouting notes: Top247 4-star LB Zaydrius Rainey-Sale – Washington commit

Zaydrius Rainey-Sale

Washington kept the No. 1 player in the state at home Monday, when Top247 four-star defensive standout Zaydrius Rainey-Sale announced his commitment to the Huskies. Ranked No. 111 overall in the 2025 class, Rainey-Sale could contribute to versatile personnel looks in college.

Versatile athlete with plenty of positional flexibility. Explosive player who shows the ability to play inside or outside and has some natural pass rush ability. Can really accelerate and close on the football. Owns the speed to run down plays from behind and outside his area. As a pass rusher, can get the edge and can cover a lot of ground in his last 3-4 steps. Dynamic hitter who can run right through a ball carrier. Getting more comfortable dropping and playing in space and was a top performer at the Under Armour Next Camp in Seattle in April, where he showed improved cover skills. Possesses an athletic 6-2.5, 220 pound-frame with a lot of room to continue to add good weight. Might project best as an inside ‘backer and a situational pass rusher. Projects as a high-P4 prospect who should be able to step in and compete for playing time early in his college career. — Biggins

Scouting notes: Top247 4-star TE Kaleb Edwards – Alabama commit

Kaleb Edwards
Kaleb Edwards (Photo: Brandon Huffman, 247Sports)

Alabama landed a Tuesday commitment from Top247 four-star tight end Kaleb Edwards out of El Dorado Hills (Calif.) Oak Ridge. Greg Biggins provides the analysis on Edwards, the No. 6 tight end in the Top247 and No. 10 overall prospect in the Golden State.

Edwards is on the short list when talking about the top tight ends in the 2025 class. Owns a prototype tight end frame. Not just a big hybrid receiver but a legitimate tight end who can make plays in the passing game — short-to-intermediate and downfield — and is also an established in-line blocker as well. Strong hands and does a nice job catching the ball through contact. Can get easy separation down the field from linebackers and safeties. Shows a burst getting off the line and is a solid route runner who can easily get in and out of his breaks. Possesses the desired multi-sport background as a talented basketball player who averaged a near double-double last season. Assuming he stays healthy and continues to develop, Edwards looks like a surefire high-major multi-year starter and potential NFL Draft pick. — Biggins

Scouting notes: Top247 4-star IOL Peyton Joseph – Florida State commit

Peyton Joseph (Photo: Andrew Ivins, 247Sports)

Florida State picked up an elite offensive line commitment Thursday in Peyton Joseph, a physical tone setter for Warner Robins (Ga.) Houston County. Here’s a closer look at Joseph, the No. 133 overall prospect in the 2025 Top247:

Big-bodied interior offensive line prospect who plays fairly quick-footed. Verified in the 6-3, 310 neighborhood with adequate length. Plays mad with an angry field demeanor that fuels block-finishing conviction. Flashes some encouraging punch power. Packs some punch when pulling or climbing, as well as promisingly in some pass pro reps. Checks the multi-sport box with limited shot put reps (43-1 as a sophomore). Experienced outside but physical specs likely force a move inside. Can improve balance and body control when engaged. Projects as a high-major IOL who could possess intriguing upside at center with the tools and talent to provide guard-to-guard roster value. One of the better IOL prospects in the 2025 cycle and a long-term NFL Draft possibility. — Brooks

Scouting notes: Top247 4-star SAF Jadon Blair – Notre Dame commit

JaDon Blair (Photo: Grace Brennan, 247Sports)

Winston Salem (N.C.) Mount Tabor’s JaDon Blair took several official visits in the past couple of months: Virginia Tech, Louisville, South Carolina, Notre Dame, Michigan, Florida State, and Penn State. Notre Dame on Friday landed a pledge from the No. 161 overall prospect in the Top247. Here are scouting notes on Blair’s game:

Enormous safety prospect that can deliver crunching blows or wrap-and-lift as a tackler. Owns one of the more unique frames in the 2025 cycle (just over 6-foot-4, 195 pounds summer before senior season). Has operated primarily out of a two-deep posting at the prep level, but future might be as a box safety or nickel linebacker given the growth potential. Eyes and instincts allow him to charge forward and prevent YAC. Sinks into zone coverage with ease and does a commendable job of feeling out routes. Has the size and athleticism to match large tight ends and shrink windows. Must improve at getting off blocks and anticipating cuts on the perimeter, but projects as a potential impact defender at the Power Four level with his rare traits. Build likely to draw the attention of NFL scouts one day. — Ivins

Scouting notes: Top247 4-star DL Smith Orogbo – Texas commit

Smith Orogbo (Photo: Jordan Scruggs, 247Sports)

Texas hit the Houston metro area to land a July 1 commitment from Smith Orogbo, a Top247 four-star defensive standout from Alief Hastings. A top 175 prospect nationally and top 25 prospect in Texas, Orogbo owns immense long-term potential.

Assembled a strong junior season to burst onto the recruiting scene. Entering senior season, stands a legitimate 6-foot-4 pushing 220 pounds with above average length that should provide sizable bulking capacity, hence the DL label. Active three-point defender who’s regularly in the backfield as a pass rusher and run defender alike. Knifes through gaps and creases. Shows some disengaging conviction against bigger blockers. Still growing into the frame, but periodically shows some promising redirecting suddenness. Closes fast, never fully gets out of a play because of athleticism/motor to work his way back in. Displays consistent get-off quickness in a three-point stance and could also present a potentially dangerous standing edge presence. Still working on consistency in hands and leverage, as well as expanding pass rush move set. Quite an intriguing prospect who’s relatively raw physically and technically, but flashes gifted athleticism and playmaking ability. Projects to the high-major level with traits that suggest an NFL Draft ceiling. — Brooks

Scouting notes: 4-star IOL Hardy Watts – Wisconsin commit

Hardy Watts (Photo: Brian Dohn, 247Sports)

Wisconsin started the month with a bang thanks to the commitment of four-star offensive lineman Hardy Watts, 247Sports’ No. 1 prospect in the state of Massachusetts and a top 20 IOL nationally. Here’s Hudson Standish’s breakdown of the talented blocker.

A former tight end who experienced a major growth spurt and is now estimated to be hovering around 6-foot-6, 290 pounds with the requisite length to play tackle or guard at the next level. Quick get-off with point-of-attack strength through the hips and hands. Strong lower half and active feet yield consistent drive-blocking power. Displays ideal lateral movement ability with the functional athleticism to engage edge speed when required. Lacrosse multi-sport participation directly translates on tape, one of the easier movers in the 2025 IOL group entering the 2024 season. Plays with great leverage and can naturally move defenders off of the line of scrimmage. High-floor offensive line prospect who could play early, but also possesses high-ceiling traits. Not clearly lacking in any particular area and does most things above average to great. Projects as a multi-year starter at the high-major level with the potential to become an NFL Draft selection. — Standish

Scouting notes: 4-star WR Waden Charles – UCF commit

Waden Charles (Photo: Andrew Ivins, 247Sports)

July 4 brought a commitment for UCF from Waden Charles, a talented pass catcher out of West Palm Beach (Fla.) Palm Beach Central. Andrew Ivins takes a closer look at the three-sport athlete in this recently updated scouting report.

A physical possession type of wide receiver who wins with body control and sure hands. Recruited by most schools to catch passes, but has also flashed as a big-framed safety who can go find the football. Measured a shade under 6-foot-2, 185 pounds spring before junior season. Already owns a muscular build, but is likely going to only add more mass once lifting at the college of his choice. Might not be a true burner, but mixes gears well to create separation and is a deceptive route runner with his fakes and breaks. Competitive in the air and has a wide catch radius. Should be viewed as a potential impact player on Saturdays that can carve out throwing windows on third down and in the red zone. Likely to provide plenty of special teams value given experience on the defensive side of the ball and could always get a look in the secondary depending on developmental progress. — Ivins

Scouting notes: Jayvan Boggs, 2025 WR – Missouri commit

Jayvan Boggs (Photo: Zach Blostein, 247Sports)

Cocoa (Fla.) playmaker Jayvan Boggs announced his commitment Thursday to Missouri. The Tigers get a receiver who gained more than 2,000 yards and scored 30 touchdowns in the past two seasons. Here’s more from Andrew Ivins:

Thick-cut wide receiver that racks up chunks of yardage after the catch. Assembled a historic junior campaign, totaling just under 1,500 receiving yards and 23 touchdowns for Florida’s 2M champs. Displays suddenness as a route runner and will set defensive backs up with dynamic cuts and slick head fakes as he attacks leverage. Quick to locate the football and has proven to be rather sure-handed. Makes his money working the smaller numbers of the route tree as he makes it extremely difficult for would-be tacklers to get him on the ground with his advanced vision and impressive contact balance. More of a build-speed prospect at this stage, but still finds ways to get into the end zone. Should be viewed as a potential zone-coverage beater that can handle a high-volume of targets in an offense that features West Coast concepts. Has multi-year Power Four starter upside and could work his rotation sooner rather than later as he doesn’t lack polish. — Ivins

Scouting notes: Zion Williams, 2025 DL – LSU commit

Zion Williams (Photo: Jordan Scruggs, 247Sports)

Lufkin (Texas) is no stranger to high-level prospects, and the latest is Zion Williams, a huge interior defensive lineman who committed Thursday to LSU. Here’s more on what the high three-star East Texan brings to Baton Rouge:

Larger interior D-line presence who could potentially serve as an anchor in the middle of multiple fronts. Power-based prospect who shows impressive play strength in pads. Capable of taking on or cleaving double teams at the high school level. Also flashes stack-and-shed ability 1-on-1. Fits the mold of a traditional nose whose impact is felt more in the run game than as a pass rusher, but does show some closing juice on a line, relative to size. Generally good get-off and snap anticipation. Also throws shot put, including a plenty respectable junior-best throw just shy of 47 feet. Sometimes stands up at the snap and can play upright at times. Relative scarcity of interior D-linemen of this physical archetype drives up value as a prospect. Projects to the P4 level as a potential multi-year starter who owns physical tools that provide even longer-term upside. — Brooks

Scouting notes: Ryan Gilbert, 2026 CB – Texas A&M commit

Ryan Gilbert (Photo: Andrew Hattersley , 247Sports)

Texas A&M picked up two 2026 commitments in the past several days from Mesquite (Texas) Horn defensive backs Markel Ford (SAF) and Ryan Gilbert (CB). Here’s a closer look at Gilbert, a high three-star who earned top defensive honors from 247Sports following an Under Armour Next camp in March.

Hyper-competitive corner prospect who could provide some role versatility in the right scheme. Undersized (verified 5-10, 170+) but plays with subtle physicality and competitiveness that frustrate receivers at the line and during the route. Seems to know how to get away with contact without creating obvious flaggable offenses. Very competitive at catch point, even vs. much bigger wideouts, which will be needed against P4 competition in the future. Not overly long but does own plus length relative to height. Combine testing data is mixed, but 22.04 200-meter time is valuable athletic context. Excelled vs. strong competition at the Under Armour Dallas Regional in Spring 2024. Projects to the P4 level as a potential quality starter down the road who could develop into an impact player. — Brooks

Scouting notes: Cannon Valenzuela, 2025 LB – Colorado State commit

Cannon Valenzuela (Photo: Mike Roach, 247Sports)

Jacksboro (Texas) four-sport standout Cannon Valenzuela (Colorado State pledge) emphatically caught our attention at this past weekend’s Texas 7on7 Championships in College Station. Debuting with a high three-star 88 rating on 247Sports, Valenzuela enters Fall 2024 after accumulating 150-plus receptions, 2,500-plus receiving yards, 26 TD catches, 200-plus tackles, five interceptions, and four forced fumbles in the past two campaigns.

Dominant two-way small-school star in TXHSFB’s Class 3A. Passes the eyeball test in live exposure. Four-sport athlete with promising context in all sports, including a 6-2 high jump and 44-5 triple jump. Also a productive hitter and pitcher on the diamond and all-around contributor in basketball (15.0 ppg, 6.9 rpg as a junior). Functional athleticism in pads reflects layered multi-sport background. Enormously productive outside receiver with run-after-catch ability. High-volume tackler as a safety with ball skills. Positive live evaluation during Texas 7on7 Championships in June 2024. Faces significant jump in competition going from Texas 3A D-II football to the FBS. Long-term position projection might be a bit murky pending verified measurements, but not necessarily a negative by any means. Projects to the FBS level as a potential P4-caliber linebacker prospect who possesses the multi-sport, multi-phase context that suggests a high developmental ceiling. — Brooks
