WESTERLY, R.I. (WJAR) — You could call it Rhode Island’s very own royal wedding!
Ocean State native Olivia Culpo and San Francisco 49er’s star Christian McCaffrey tied the knot at the iconic Ocean House in Westerly.
Shielded by a wall of black umbrellas, the Cranston native was dressed in all white.
“I was hoping for more,” one visitor from New York, told NBC 10.
“I just wasn’t expecting all of the umbrellas. It was like watching an umbrella wedding, but it was cool none-the-less.”
“We’ve seen her go from Miss Rhode Island to Miss USA to Miss Universe,” said a spectator.
“I’m glad that Olivia is honoring her Rhode Island roots,” added another.
The ceremony was held at Watch Hill Chapel Saturday afternoon and transitioned to the hotel greens for the reception.
“We saw Shane Gillis,” exclaimed one passerby.” That was my favorite. Had a little conversation, he gave us a thumbs up.”
The wedding was nostalgic for one Westerly resident.
“We got married in that chapel right there 29 years ago.”
Others just showed up to get a glimpse of the action.
“They were carrying flowers across the street. They dropped some, so I have flowers from the wedding you, know,” one woman said.
Security tightened as day turned into night.
“What I noticed was that they had to give up their phones at one point, so where you could see a few pics, things went dark,” explained entertainment reporter, and radio personality Bekah Berger.
“There’s a lot of excitement and exclusivity about this wedding,” Berger said.
