Name: Terry Gilliland

Previous title: Chief medical officer and chief science officer, Cogitativo

New title: President and CEO, Geisinger Health

Gilliland will take the reins of Geisinger Health as its current CEO, Jaewon Ryu, transitions to lead Risant Health.

Risant is a nonprofit health system first created last April when Oakland, California-based Kaiser Permanente said it planned to acquire Danville, Pennsylvania-based Geisinger. Under the proposed deal, which is still pending regulatory review, Geisinger will become part of Risant. Kaiser intends to use Risant to buy and operate other nonprofit health systems. However, Geisinger will retain its own name and mission, according to the original deal announcement.

As the new CEO of Geisinger, Gilliland will oversee the 10-hospital system and manage a health plan with more than 500,000 members, as well as a research institute and the Geisinger College of Health Sciences, according to the announcement.

The executive previously served as the chief medical officer and chief science officer for Cogitativo, an artificial intelligence and machine learning company that focuses on healthcare. He also served as an executive vice president of healthcare quality and affordability at Blue Shield of California and as a senior vice president and chief medical officer at Sentara Healthcare.

Gilliland steps into his role as Geisinger reports a $37 million operating loss for 2023, which is an improvement from a $239 million loss in 2022.
